Colnbrook’s valuable location on the London to Bath road is shown by its retention of three pubs, though the railway station was closed by Beeching in 1965.

To the east, Stanwell has a high quality medieval village church with a spender spire. As with so many of our ancient churches, expect no pat answer when asking ‘how old is it?’ The tower, windows, arcade and roof all date from the 13-15^th century.

Inside, there is a brass of 1400 and a standing wall monument with ultra life -size marble figures kneeling opposite each other. This imposing pair are Lord and Lady Knyvett who died in 1622.

The town is most noted for being the birthplace of one of England’s best-loved fruit: the Cox’s orange pippin. It was created by retired brewer and amateur horticulturalist, Richard Cox, in his garden ‘The Lawns’ in 1830.  Its popularity grew after its listing in the Royal Slough nurseries catalogue in 1850.  By 1883, it was one of the most widely-grown apple varieties in the country, a position it retains today - now comprising 50% of the dessert apple crop.

Its distinctive taste has led to many attempts to develop cultivars. Several of which are equally well-known names in the world of apples: such as James Grieve and Laxton’s Superb. A special mention is merited for Ellison’s Orange, juicier than its parent and which develops a delicious aniseed flavour when left to ripen for a few months.  Look out for these at a specialist apple stall in your farmers’ market: you won’t find them in a plastic bag in the supermarket!
